Pdf Summary
The 2019 AANEM Electrodiagnostic Medicine Self-Assessment Examination is a comprehensive educational tool designed to help physicians evaluate and enhance their understanding and skills in electrodiagnostic medicine. The examination is developed and overseen by the Electrodiagnostic Medicine Self-Assessment Examination Committee, composed of experts in various fields and regions across North America.

The AANEM’s mission is to improve patient care quality and advance neuromuscular and electrodiagnostic medicine science by supporting medical professionals who treat muscle and nerve disorders. The association offers a variety of educational resources, including printed materials, multimedia, online education, and live programs. Its official journal is Muscle & Nerve.

The self-assessment exam (EDXSAE) is a training tool for individuals and institutions, which provides National Average Results but does not offer a pass/fail grade. The examination consists of three parts:

1. **Part I – Video Clip Examination**: Fifty multiple-choice questions based on video clips of electrical potentials recorded with needle electrodes. It tests the ability to describe and identify motor unit action potentials, spontaneous activity, and abnormal potentials in 1 hour.

2. **Part II – Written Examination**: One hundred multiple-choice questions over 2 hours, covering background knowledge and the application of neurophysiologic techniques to diagnose, evaluate, and treat patients. Topics include clinical applications, anatomy, pathology, needle EMG, and nerve conduction studies.

3. **Part III – Review Session**: Provides correct answers, question analysis, and references. Completion of all three parts is required to receive Continuing Medical Education (CME) credits.

The examination's objectives are to help physicians identify their strengths and weaknesses, serve as a study guide, aid in residency training programs, and fulfill maintenance of certification requirements. A suggested reference list and other study materials are available on the AANEM website, which can also assist in preparing for the American Board of Electrodiagnostic Medicine (ABEM) examinations.

Institutions proctoring the exam have designated liaisons to facilitate the process. The exam's design aims for continuous improvement based on candidate feedback. The AANEM is accredited by the ACCME and provides up to 13 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits for the enduring material, including approvals from relevant specialty boards for maintenance of certification.
