Pdf Summary
The 2020 American Association of Neuromuscular & Electrodiagnostic Medicine (AANEM) Electrodiagnostic Medicine Self-Assessment Examination (SAE) serves as a comprehensive educational tool. Developed under the guidance of Dr. Laura Nist, the examination encompasses multiple-choice questions aimed at evaluating both individual practitioners and training institutions in electrodiagnostic techniques.

The SAE is divided into three parts. Part I consists of 50 video clip questions to be completed in one hour, assessing the identification of electrical potentials recorded with needle electrodes and displayed on a monitor. Physicians must interpret motor unit action potentials, spontaneous activity, and abnormal potentials. Part II, consisting of 100 multiple-choice questions to be completed in two hours, evaluates background knowledge and the application of neurophysiologic techniques in diagnosing and treating neuromuscular conditions. Topics include anatomy, the autonomic nervous system, electromyography (EMG), nerve conduction studies, and muscle and nerve pathology. Part III is a review session required for Continuing Medical Education (CME) credit.

The SAE's educational objectives aim to help physicians identify strengths and weaknesses in electrodiagnostic medicine, serve as a study guide, and meet certification maintenance requirements. The evaluation process is crucial for refining future exams.

The AANEM’s mission to improve patient care and advance neuromuscular disease science is supported by offering educational materials, webinars, practice guidelines, and the "Muscle & Nerve" journal. The programs in education, research, and quality assurance foster continuous learning and expertise among healthcare professionals.

Candidates are encouraged to complete an online evaluation to provide feedback for future examination improvements. Moreover, the exam helps fulfill CME requirements, being accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) and approved by the American Boards of Psychiatry and Neurology and Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation. Training Program Liaisons play a pivotal role in administering the SAE in their institutions.
