Pdf Summary
This handout, presented by Dr. Sarada Sakamuri at the 2025 AANEM Annual Meeting, outlines the use of neuromuscular ultrasound to enhance needle electromyography (EMG) procedures. Neuromuscular ultrasound facilitates real-time visualization of muscles and their relationships with nerves and vascular structures, improving the accuracy and safety of needle placement during EMG. The workshop focuses on spatial orientation of relevant muscles and critical adjacent anatomy, using live models and ultrasound images acquired with high-frequency transducers.

Anatomical details of the upper extremity include the volar forearm at various levels from the elbow to the wrist. Key muscle groups discussed are the pronator teres, flexor carpi radialis, palmaris longus, flexor digitorum superficialis and profundus, and flexor pollicis longus, alongside nerves such as the median, ulnar, and superficial radial, and vessels like the brachial and radial arteries. The hand’s thenar eminence muscles are also detailed, including the abductor pollicis brevis, opponens pollicis, flexor pollicis brevis, and adductor pollicis.

For the lower extremity, the handout covers muscles and nerves around the knee and ankle, important for EMG targeting. These include the tibialis anterior, extensor digitorum longus, fibularis longus, extensor hallucis longus, tibialis posterior, flexor digitorum longus, and medial gastrocnemius. Various anatomical approaches for needling specific muscles are illustrated, emphasizing proper probe placement and arm/leg positioning.

Overall, the resource serves as a visual and practical guide for practitioners to refine their needle EMG techniques using ultrasound guidance, enhancing anatomical recognition and clinical outcomes in neuromuscular diagnostics. CME credit is available for AANEM members.
