Pdf Summary
This workshop reviews nerve conduction studies of five sensory nerves that are not routinely tested: the medial antebrachial cutaneous (MAC), lateral antebrachial cutaneous (LAC), dorsal ulnar cutaneous (DUC), lateral femoral cutaneous (LFC), and saphenous nerves.

It summarizes each nerve’s roots, sensory territory, and common injury or compression sites. MAC and LAC studies can help investigate forearm symptoms after surgery, abnormal routine sensory responses, or suspected brachial plexus injury or Parsonage–Turner syndrome. DUC testing is useful for numbness over the back of the hand and for distinguishing lesions above or below its branch point on the ulnar nerve. LFC studies can assess anterolateral thigh symptoms, including suspected meralgia paresthetica, particularly after weight change or hip replacement. Saphenous studies may assist in evaluating femoral neuropathy or symptoms around the medial knee, calf, and foot.

The presentation outlines electrode placement and stimulation points for each nerve, including recording distances and grounding. It also emphasizes practical factors that improve recordings: keep the limb warm, clean the skin to remove oils and prevent salt bridging, and help the patient and examiner remain relaxed and comfortable.

Troubleshooting recommendations include recleaning the skin, checking for salt bridges, using lighter pressure for the superficial MAC and LAC nerves, testing the unaffected side first for comparison, and returning to a difficult study later if needed.
