Pdf Summary
Electrodiagnostic (EDX) Medicine involves the study of nerve and muscle diseases. One common way to evaluate the function of nerves and muscles is through EDX testing, which includes a nerve conduction study (NCS) and a needle electromyography (EMG) test. These tests are used to diagnose conditions and determine the most appropriate treatment. The American Association of Neuromuscular & Electrodiagnostic Medicine (AANEM) aims to ensure quality care for patients with muscle and nerve disorders.

Nerves send signals from your body to your brain and vice versa, while muscles are the tissues that enable movement. When nerves are not transmitting signals correctly, it indicates a nerve disorder, whereas a muscle disorder means that muscles are not responding properly to the signals.

If you experience symptoms such as numbness, tingling, pain, weakness, or muscle cramping, your doctor may refer you to an EDX laboratory for testing. Before the tests, it is important to inform the doctor about any medications, pacemakers, or existing conditions you have. You should also avoid using body lotion and ensure your skin is oil-free on the day of the test.

The EDX test typically includes needle EMG testing and nerve conduction studies. During the EMG test, a small needle is inserted into muscles to assess their functioning, while nerve conduction studies involve applying electrical shocks to your nerves to evaluate their performance. The duration of the test varies for each patient but usually takes 30 to 60 minutes.

After the tests are complete, the doctor will discuss the results with you or send them to your referring doctor. You can then follow up with the doctor who referred you for further treatment.

It is recommended to choose a doctor who is board-certified in neurology or physical medicine and rehabilitation and has completed additional EDX training. The AANEM provides resources to find EDX specialists, board-certified doctors, and accredited laboratories.
