Pdf Summary
Loss of appetite is a common symptom in individuals with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). It can lead to weight loss and negatively impact quality of life (QoL). However, there is limited research on appetite in ALS, including the measurement tools used, its impact on QoL, and strategies to improve appetite.

A scoping review was conducted to characterize the existing literature on appetite loss in ALS. Ten articles met the inclusion criteria and were included in the review. Seven different instruments were used to assess appetite, with the Council of Nutrition Appetite Questionnaire being the most common. No studies included a subjective assessment of appetite loss. Several potential factors associated with appetite loss were identified, including older age, low score on the ALS Rating Scale, weight loss, and decreased calorie intake. QoL was measured using various tools, but there was no consensus on the assessment of appetite's impact on QoL.

The review highlights the lack of standardized measurement tools for appetite in ALS and the need for more research on this topic. It suggests that appetite loss should be differentiated from weight loss and that interventions to improve appetite may be beneficial for individuals with ALS. The heterogeneity of the included studies and the limited number of publications in this area restrict the clinical applicability of the findings.

Future studies should focus on developing standardized measurement tools for appetite in ALS and investigating the impact of appetite on QoL. These studies can help guide clinical management and interventions for individuals with ALS and appetite loss.
