This review article focuses on the regeneration and reinnervation of sensory nerves in muscle after peripheral nerve injury. Sensory afferent fibers play a crucial role in motor nerves and are involved in proprioception and sensorimotor extremity control. After nerve injury, sensory afferents have shown evidence of reinnervating muscle, including muscle that was not its original target. This reinnervation can occur after various types of nerve injury and muscle models, and can result in cross-innervation. Several clinical applications of sensory reinnervation in muscle are highlighted, including motor control after nerve repair, flap sensation, sensory protection of denervated muscle, neuroma treatment and prevention, and prosthetic sensorimotor control. The review emphasizes the potential clinical implications of sensory nerve regeneration and reinnervation in muscle and the need for a comprehensive understanding of the process to improve clinical applications.
