Ethics Vignette XX: Hostility in the Workplace
Technologist Copes with Interfering and Condescending Parent of Child Patient
Description
Introduction: The American Association of Neuromuscular & Electrodiagnostic Medicine’s (AANEM’s) Ethics and Peer Review Committee has created educational vignettes that highlight common ethical situations confronted by physicians and technologists that care for patients with neuromuscular and musculoskeletal disorders. Ethics, the moral principles that guide our behavior, play a key role in decision-making about common neuromuscular issues—from genetic testing to palliative care, informed consent, and patients refusing treatment. They also impact physician-technologist-patient interactions and conflicts of interest. AANEM’s educational vignettes reference and also seek to familiarize the reader with the AANEM Guidelines for Ethical Behavior Relating to Clinical Practice Issues in Neuromuscular and Electrodiagnostic Medicine (Ethical Guidelines).

EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES: Upon completion of this educational activity, participants will acquire skills to (1) effectively handle hostility in the workplace, (2) maintain control in a hostile workplace, (3) apply the correct ethical response to hostility in the workplace, and (4) remain courteous, respectful, and empathetic while concentrating and staying focused to the job at hand.
