Self-Assessment: Musculoskeletal Mimics
Self-Assessment: Musculoskeletal Mimics
Musculoskeletal Mimics Self-Assessment
CME Available - No Technologist Credit
This self‑assessment exam focuses on musculoskeletal conditions that mimic cervical and lumbosacral radiculopathies and peripheral neuropathies, with emphasis on myofascial pain, hip and shoulder pathology, greater trochanteric pain syndrome, hamstring tendinopathy, and plantar fasciitis. Through case‑based multiple‑choice questions, learners will practice distinguishing key historical features, examination maneuvers, diagnostic tests, and initial treatment approaches that help separate true neuropathic pain from its musculoskeletal mimics in everyday clinical practice.
The Musculoskeletal Mimics Self-Assessment (SA) is an excellent study guide for maintenance of certification or preparing for board exams. The American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN) and the American Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (ABPMR) have reviewed and approved this product as part of a comprehensive lifelong learning program, which is mandated by the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) as a necessary component of continuous certification.
Objectives:
The objectives are to: 1) differentiate radiculopathy and neuropathy from common musculoskeletal mimics using key history and examination findings; 2) select appropriate diagnostic tests and imaging to identify the primary pain generator in neck, back, and limb pain and 3) outline initial evidence‑based treatment options for myofascial and other musculoskeletal mimics of neuropathic pain.
