Patients commonly are referred for evaluation for numbness or sensory dysfunction in the lateral outer thigh. This Teachable Moment reviews the clinical and electrophysiologic evidence of patients with lateral femoral cutaneous neuropathy (“meralgia paresthetica”). 

Objective: The learner will be able to: 1) recognize the clinical features of neuralgia parasthetica (lateral femoral cutaneous neuropathy); 2)identify the various causes and etiologies of the condition; 3) apply appropriate electrodiagnostic and neuromuscular ultrasound techniques to evaluate patients with suspected lateral femoral cutaneous neuropathy.
