Ethics Vignette XIII: Deception and Non-Disclosure reviews and discusses the ethical issues of deception and non-disclosure to third parties. The intended audience is physicians, residents and fellows, and is also relevant to technologists.

AANEM ethical vignettes utilize true clinical scenarios to highlight common ethical situations confronted by neuromuscular physicians and technologists. Specific application of AANEM's Ethical Guidelines are discussed throughout each vignette. This vignette references Ethical Guidelines' sections The Patient-Physician Relationship in Neuromuscular and Electrodiagnostic Medicine and Relationships with Other Professionals.

EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES: Upon completion of this educational activity, participants will be able to (1) Outline reasons for physicians using deception as a strategy in disclosure to third parties; (2) Understand how a physician’s beliefs regarding the equity of third party decisions related to coverage and third party processes of appeal relates to deception in disclosure to third parties; (3) Discern how lying and deception in disclosure to third parties can undermine the relationship between physicians and patients and society as well as undermine social trust; (4) and discuss suggestions that could help physicians deal with patient's requests to use deception to gain benefits.
