Pdf Summary
The 2023 Coding Guide provided by AANEM is a comprehensive resource for all codes related to electrodiagnostic and neuromuscular procedures, as well as evaluation and management services. The guide is divided into several sections to make it easy to navigate and find the necessary information.

The first section, Coding Basics, provides a disclaimer and covers the fundamental principles of coding. It also includes information on global periods, which are the time frames for which certain procedures are reimbursed.

The second section focuses on Electrodiagnostic and Neuromuscular CPT™ codes. It explains the rules for physician supervision of these codes and provides a detailed explanation of the codes themselves. A table of the EDX and NM codes is included, along with common modifiers. Additionally, there is an appendix listing the nerves covered by the codes and information on new codes and updates for 2023.

The third section is dedicated to Evaluation and Management (E/M) codes. It explains what E/M codes are and discusses the factors and levels involved in evaluation and management services. It also provides definitions of medical decision-making elements and addresses billing for same-day evaluation and management and electrodiagnostic testing.

Section four covers ICD-10-CM codes, with information on understanding and using these codes. It includes abbreviations, punctuation, and symbols commonly used in ICD-10-CM coding and provides specific coding guidelines for different chapters. There is also a list of commonly used ICD-10-CM codes in EDX and NM medicine.

Section five introduces the Resource-based Relative Value Scale (RBRVS) and explains how it is used in determining reimbursement for services. It includes information on geographic practice cost indices and provides a comparison of relative values for NCS and Needle EMG. The CMS Physician Fee Schedule is also discussed.

Section six offers suggestions and sample documents related to coding and billing. It includes sample billing forms, guidance on dealing with EMG claims denials, and sample appeal letters. AANEM provides additional letters that can be used to aid in appeals, including letters addressing nonphysician performing EMG and poor physician EMG.

The last section contains frequently asked questions on various coding topics, including code changes, EMG, nerve conduction studies, intraoperative monitoring, autonomic function tests, evoked potentials, global vs. technical billing, ICD-10-CM, evaluation and management, chemodenervation, and modifiers.
