Pdf Summary
A compilation of article summaries from the AANEM News Science Editorial Board covering various topics in neurology, including autoimmune myasthenia gravis, neurologic manifestations in COVID-19, immune-mediated myopathy in patients with SARS-CoV-2 infection, biomarkers for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, IgG1 pan-neurofascin antibodies in neuropathy, ulnar nerve hypermobility and neuropathy at the elbow, and the use of ultrasound in pediatric patients in an electrodiagnostic laboratory. Key findings include lower levels of physical activity in autoimmune myasthenia gravis patients, common neurologic manifestations in COVID-19 patients, potential biomarkers for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, and the use of ultrasound to guide further investigations in pediatric patients. A meta-analysis on amyotrophic lateral sclerosis in Latin America found lower occurrence compared to Europe and North America, with higher mortality rates in countries with higher proportion of Caucasian population and higher income level. The iMAX test showed decreased nerve excitability in patients with Charcot-Marie-Tooth and chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy. Comorbidities were more common in older patients with myasthenia gravis, and shear wave elastography and high-definition color could differentiate between normal individuals and carpal tunnel syndrome patients. The risk of Guillain-Barré syndrome following COVID-19 vaccination was lower than influenza vaccination. Intravenous edaravone therapy did not provide additional benefit for ALS patients compared to standard therapy alone. Physician evaluation of extensor digitorum brevis muscle bulk correlated with nerve conduction studies in fibular motor nerve. Rituximab resulted in higher disease improvement and lower prednisolone doses in generalized myasthenia gravis patients, but had a higher incidence of adverse events.
